Anti-racism and non-modern aerial combat. Sounds like an awesome movie.
It’s produced by George Lucas, who did an interview on the Daily Show about the movie. It has some very interesting and blunt views of Hollywood institutional racism.
Summary: It has taken George Lucas 23 years to make this film. One of the primary reasons was attempting to convince studios to release it. According to George, the studios rejected the project because that they don’t know how to market this film because the cast is predominantly black. The studios aren’t willing to risk a predominantly black cast on the international market, which represents 60% of the average profit of big production Hollywood films. They prefer to play it safe.
I wish I could say I didn’t understand the studio’s logic. But where big corporations fail to take the risk of losing money for a good reason, George Lucas has stepped in and funded the entire film himself. Meaning that George will have produced the first predominately black cast action film to be released out of Hollywood. Kinda sad that something like “first predominately black” phrases are still being said in the year 2012, for a variety of reasons.
Either way the film is opening this weekend. See if you can’t make some time.
