Star Power is a three-day a week comic written by the author of Dominic Deegan, Michael “Mookie” Terracciano, and drawn by Garth Graham, whose other work I don’t know but is an excellent artist.
Star Power is about a super hero in a science fiction setting, which is neat in and off itself. But that is not why I am recommending it to you. I’m recommending it to you because of the latest page, which is sadly a spoiler to most of the action of Chapter 2. So I recommend starting from the beginning, but if you need more proof, click here for Star Power: Vol 1 – Chapter 2 – Page 20: Right Call. I’ll warn you it likely doesn’t have the same emotional impact.
Aside from that, the comic has a baseline of aspects that just make it likeable, including varied characters of obvious depth, good levels of humor and drama. If I have one complaint it is how slow the story moves, even with a three-day a week schedule.
And now for your daily dose of kittens & techno/dub-step
Remember my short story I wrote for Free Write called Disguise? No? Well either way, here is a piece of fiction written by Terry Bisson that illustrates an idea I had in that story, which was that sentient biological life was so rare and weird, that nobody was willing to believe it existed. This is a rather clever story, done completely in dialog. I highly recommend you read it.
THEY’RE MADE OUT OF MEAT
By Terry Bisson.
Originally appeared in Omni 1990. Creative Commons.
“They’re made out of meat.”
“Meat. They’re made out of meat.”
“There’s no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, and probed them all the way through. They’re completely meat.”
“That’s impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars?”
You have likely heard of the Mantis Shrimp. If you have not, it is perhaps one of the sea’s most special creatures. So special that The Oatmeal devoted and entire rambling comic to how awesomely special it is, which I must share with you.
Actually I’m pretty sure it was the porn that spawned the idea.
This is the most amazing idea ever.
Okay now I want to hire an employee just so I can do this.
Yeah I’m with PeeJee. I’m not sure I’d go that far.
Allie Brosh, the creator of Hyperbole and a Half, a comic series of hilarity dealing from everything from pets to depression, is publishing a book. And she was asked to market said book on the internet. Which she did on Twitter. To which someone on Tumblr happily collected into the following link. Please read it, as it is hilarious.
I was seriously into Tic-Tac-Toe when I was a kid.. until I solved it. Then I stumbled upon Math With Bad Drawing’s new Ultimate Tic Tac Toe.
The full discussion of rules and strategy can be found here, but here are the quicky rules:
- Each turn, you mark one of the small squares.
- When you get three in a row on a small board, you’ve won that board.
- To win the game, you need to win three small boards in a row.
- You don’t get to pick which of the nine boards to play on. That’s determined by your opponent’s previous move. Whichever square they pick, that’s the board you must play in next. And whichever square you pick will determine which board he plays on next. If you are sent to a board that’s already been won, you may go wherever you like.
- If the small board is a tie choose one, treat it as empty, neither player can use it to win.
- A variant is to have the small tile treat as a win for both people.
That last rule is obviously the most important and the most interesting!
In addition multiple people have created online versions of this game since the original post went up! Check out the original post for the list!
If that didn’t get your attention maybe the below will.
These were created by Asya Kozina from Russia and are amazing. There are plenty more to see on the following sources!
The myth of not touching baby birds because their parents will abandon them has annoyed me for a while. Luckily artist Rosemary Mosco has created this lovely graphic for helping us decide what to do:
A Dr. Who and Back to the Future mash-up trailer that is hilarious.
