Word Count: 1,667 [0]
Total Word Count: 3,541 (Delta: +207)

So writing was a little easier today. I was just continuing the scene from yesterday. I didn’t find time to work on more outline, which is troubling, but I did have an idea of what to do next. So I’m not fumbling too much. Writing group isn’t as large as it was last year, with only two of us showing up physically, but we’re keeping each other going. Internet members are always hard to goad on, sadly.

Writing Buddies

A quick shout out to jagmunoz, laura_williams, and sithwitch13 for keeping up their word count on the NaNoWriMo webpage. I also have it on good authority that sigmad is only a few hundred words behind. A special not to sithwitch13 who has a whopping 5,441 words. Way to go and stop making the rest of us look like slackers! ;)

Excerpt
Zombies were not really all that dangerous individually even when they were fresh and they only got worse the more they ripened. The group that was covering on them was small compared to the hordes that used to throw themselves at the walls and most of them looked like they had been dead a long time. A zombie’s main advantage was that it took a large amount of effort to kill a single zombie. They seemed immune to pain and were unfatiguable. So while one person took the time to kill a single zombie, several more could easily just shamble up next to them and lunge. The second advantage a zombie had was that they were strong. One a zombie had a grip on someone it was often easier to cut off the zombie’s hand than to pry yourself away. The best tactics when taking on a zombie horde was to skirmish. Move in and attack and then move away. Keep moving so they have to follow you, attack when they weren’t prepared to lunge. This worked best in teams so each person didn’t have to worry about being ambushed.
Writing Time: Everlasting #33, Science Future #3

by on Aug.02, 2011, under Articles, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

Writing has been going well enough. Last week I took off writing of Everlasting and Science future to do some writing for Ruminant Productions. Got some actual writing done on Everlasting today and the week prior. Next Thursday I will likely work on Science Future.

Writing came easily today, which was nice. My word count is well over a thousand as opposed to the last time I wrote, which I only met around four hundred words. I haven’t exactly been looking forward to writing sessions lately but I have been proud of myself for keeping them.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 92,187 (Delta: +3,119[19])

Everlasting is progressing. I’m still not happy with it overall but I’ll fix that in editing. I really shouldn’t judge it before it is finished but it has been awhile since I have written a really awesome scene that I felt really fit what I want to make that I’m kinda feeling weary of the book. I think I’ll be happy to move on to a new project. Or perhaps completely refurbish the plot and characters. I’m not sure. I try not to fantasize about it too much!

Science Future

I’ve published one article since last time that I mentioned in description. Science Future: Harking Hugos. Feel free to go look at it. I haven’t started a new article yet not have the articles been receiving a lot of comments but hopefully with time. I may experiment a bit more with the style.

Anomalous Writing

Anomalous Writing is plugging away. We lost another member to moving away so the official physical member count is down to three. All three were in attendance today, however, which was heartening. I need to start recruiting again!

So that’s about all for writing time. Slither creative!

Writing Time: Everlasting #32, Science Future #2

by on Jul.14, 2011, under Articles, Science Future, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

So it has been nearly a month since an update and for that I apologize. It has been a significant amount of busy recently and while I have been writing regularly I haven’t always had time to write an update. I don’t actually now how much progress I’ve made in everlasting yet so this will be illuminating for me as well as you. Some progress has been made with Science Future, as you will see, and overall I am rather satisfied with the pace of my writing at the moment, even if it feels a little slow.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 89, 068 (Delta: +1701[28] Delta: -2299)

So this would help explain why it has felt slow. Even at an expect thousand words a week, last week was completely spent on Science Future and the week before that I did not actually even write as I skipped the writing sessions. If I account for that, I’m really only -299 words behind which I can attribute to lazy writing sessions. Today, for example, I worked on outline and fleshing out some NPCs because I’m coming close to the pivot point for the last third of the book and I wanted that worked out. I think I was actually fairly creative in that endeavor today so I am feeling of good spirits.

At this rate though I question if I will be done before this year’s NaNoWriMo. I also question if I’ll try to participate in NaNoWriMo this year or if I will just help host it with my writing group but not actually officially participate. Questions for September/October when I’ll need to start preparing.

Character sketches will be coming soon. Negotiations are done and the work has been started. Art takes time, of course, so I can’t promise anything anytime soon.

Anomalous Writing Update

Anomalous Writing has been slow the past few weeks. I’m looking into Google+ Hangouts as a way to try to improve the online connectivity as a private online chat room that was technically easy to connect to was hard to set up. Still at least one other person is showing up almost every day, even if some days I defacto join the other writing group. As a habit, writing is now fully formed so I doubt I need anomalous to make myself write anymore but I do like having the group and want to try to expand its membership still. Just not sure how.

Science Future

Science future is going well. I have my third and fourth article written. The third has already been released and the fourth will likely be published by the end of the month. You can view the third article here. It deals with various human memory related scientific advances. The fourth article is special in that it finds a related article in science news for some of the Hugo nominated stories which Escape Pod hosts every year. I thought it a fitting theme. It took an entire week to write since I was focused on four very particular stories. I think in order to better streamline the process, I will be limiting myself to finding scientific breakthroughs as they related to only one story, or multiple stories that related to only one breakthrough. Takes less time that way. Finding images that can be used for the articles is still proving tough and time-consuming, however.

So that has been my writing for the last month. Spew creatively!

Writing Time: Everlasting #31, Science Future #0

Writing Time

So things are changing. Likely. I’m changing up the format for Everlasting to incorporate a new writing project I’ll be pursuing called Science Future. More on that below. So this article is now called Writing Time and will cover Everlasting, Science Future, and anything I do with the Anomalous Writing group, plus any other writing projects I start, including stuff from Ruminant Productions.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 81,806 (Delta: +947[7])

Very close to meeting my word count last week. I actually seem to remember hitting it. Or maybe I just hit the end of the scene I was writing because I did do a bit of Anomalous Writing upkeep.  Today won’t see an improvement in word count as I am doing a management day as I need to leave an hour early. Instead I’ll be focused on one of my new writing projects, Science Future. I’ll explain that in a second.

I need to get into the habit of writing outside of writing sessions as I think my writing time is about to get sucked up by Science Future and Ruminant Productions. We’ll see. I need to finish this draft however. With my outline better fleshed out it is definitely easier to write these last few sections, even if I don’t like what I am writing. The urge to edit lately has been huge. And procrastinate. Ugh. Even writing this post is a form of procrastination. I am, right now, looking forward to just ending this novel and starting something new, be it a new idea or just a short story in the world.

Everlasting Stats
The following stats are a little off because I started writing before I finished this post so they represent a few extra words than last time.

Current Outline: 10,451 Words (Delta +0)
Draft:  81,806 Words (Delta: +947)
Grand Total: 109,445 Words (Delta +952)

Anomalous Writing Update

I got feedback on my achievements idea! Yay! I did a bit of working on this over the weekend, cleaning up some of the ideas a bit more. Still having problems with the idea of incentives. Incentives should be positive, and something the group can’t do regularly. This leaves out food ideas, since we tend to meet at a food place. I don’t want to do incentives that allow members to do things they can already do but shouldn’t (such as editing, or moving on to other works). Maybe I can come up with stuff like that and make it a voluntary ‘hardcore’ mode of some kind, for those who need outside structure to keep themselves from editing or keep motivated just to write and want to do it that way.

Still looking forward to writing more achievements. Here is a current set of what I am thinking of:
Finished your first draft of your first novel.
Finished your first draft of your first short story
Finished the first draft of your first flash fiction.
Finished the final draft of your first novel.
Finished the final draft of your first short story.
Finished the final draft of your first flash fiction.
Finished a draft of a story. Must have finished at least one story.
Finished a story ready for submission. Must have finished at least one story.
I Killed My Darling!
Removed a particularly good piece of writing that just didn’t work in your novel.
Sir Author, In the Study, With the Writing Pen
Finished writing a mystery story.
We completed… The Quest!
Finished writing an adventure story.
Science Future Update

So I don’t think I mentioned but awhile back I saw a notice that a podcast I listen to regularly, EscapePod, was looking for people to blog for them. Since I blog here somewhat regularly, even with content that isn’t just my own personal thoughts or repeats of YouTube links (sometimes, anyway) I decided to email and try for it. After some back and forth I wrote up two articles working on the premise that I could link current on-going science with science fiction, since EscapePod is a podcast of short science-fiction. The editor likes it with some minor changes, so I’ll be trying to do this regularly. I’m going to be aiming for a twice monthly article on the site, which, assuming they give me permission, I will link to here so you know when it goes live.

So yeah. Wish me luck! I’ll likely be devoting some Anomalous time to these articles so expect Everlasting to slow down.

Flying creative!

Video: Extra Credits: Gamification & Gamifying Education

by on May.09, 2011, under Articles, Entertainment, Gaming, Video Games, Videos, Visual Media, Writing, Writing Group

So I thought I posted the below video weeks ago but I can’t find it in the archive, for which I very much apologize to all of you. So you get a double-header of Extra Credits today!

Today’s topic talks about what lessons we can take away from gaming as a whole and apply to other tasks in our lives to make them more productive. Particularly in work and education. The first video touches upon ideas in general. The second focuses on education in specific but still has great ideas for group-based activities.

Gamification

Gamifiying Education

The second video gave me a great idea for something to do with the achievements system I am creating for Anomalous Writing, my writing group.

Everlasting #30

by on May.03, 2011, under Articles, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

Draft Word Count: 80,859 (Delta: +1,038[7])

Word count achieved today! Actually writing today was really easy. I got it done rather early and decided to work on the writing achievement system for Anomalous Writing, which I made good progress on so overall, today’s session went very well!

Everlasting Update

Today’s writing went very smooth. We got into the head of Sylvia again today. Her fear of dead bodies is not something constant in her character but I think it is an interesting idea for both a trauma doctor and someone surviving a zombie apocalypse. On the other hand I’m worried perhaps people will think I’m simply picking on the female gender, since she is freezing up a lot. I might need to be more explicit from the beginning she fears dead bodies or finds them weird but that is something to worry about in editing!

Anomalous Writing Update

Achievements have been started! I did some light Google searching and really couldnt’ find anyone who had done this before. I have stolen the idea from I Should Be Writing podcast but I figured it can’t be that new of an idea right? Giving people little goals to achieve for as they do a task? I dunno. The list is going alright. It is kind of hard to categorize them. I had a separate writing and editing section but I’ve now condensed that into one section. I haven’t started coming up with interesting names yet. I’m hoping that won’t be too hard! Here are some examples:

  • Finished your first draft of a novel.
  • Finished your second draft of a novel.
  • Finished a final draft of your novel.
  • Finished your second novel.
  • Finished your fifth novel.
    • Finished a novel. Repeatable.
  • Finished your second short story.
  • Finished your fifth short story.
  • Finished your tenth short story.
    • Finished a short story. Repeatable.

So yeah. I just need to give them names, and then hopefully come up with badge/graphic ideas for them!

Everlasting #29

by on Apr.26, 2011, under Articles, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

Draft Word Count: 79,821 (Delta: +2,858[5])

Man I kicked butt today didn’t I? Two thousand eight hundred and fifty-eight words. Of course that is in two and a half hours of writing. I took some extra time today because I didn’t have anything pressing to do immediately after the writing group. I got more than half of that written after the writing group disbanded for the day but we won’t hold that against them. I still daydreamed and procrastinated even with them gone. Writing was good today. I was in the mood for it. I looked forward to it through the day actually which is a pleasant feeling. Perhaps I’ve gotten the spark back!

Everlasting Update

So today’s writing was all about the events in Qual Plaza. It actually kind of hurt a little because I did some world defining as I wrote and didn’t take the time to note it, which means I’ll need to mine it for info for world building later. Not looking forward to that honestly. Olivia tells an interesting story. I think her story will need to become more detailed once I’m done with this draft. I do need to plot out how zombie plague spreads through the city. I think it will make telling about it far easier. Maybe write a short story of someone writing a report about how it worked and how it spread.

Anomalous Writing Update

Only Marie today but she was a good enough reason to come and pleasant company. She mentioned how much she has gotten out of the writing group forming which made me rather glad to have formed it. All the more awesome if she manages to get her book to a final draft form. I will have helped someone actually finish a book. I already did help her finish a draft. Go writing group! I think tonight I will be working a bit on Anomalous work, since I keep saying I would.

A good word count today! I might have done better but I let myself get distracted several times but that is alright. Progress has been made!

Everlasting Update

One entire scene written from scratch. We got some speculation on Lee’s part. Some interaction between him and Tyla. It’ll need revising but I think it is a good foundation. Nothing exactly perfect but it all sucks to begin with right?

Anomalous Writing Update

Full meeting today! Four people! Jeana and Marie as per normal. Steph decided to join us today and work a bit on her book as well. She mentioned the other day she’d be contributing windows, which are a writing techniques for figuring out your characters. I’m looking forward to them.

Draft Word Count: 76,963 (Delta: +0[5])

No actual writing done today on the draft, lots of writing in the outline (or so I think, we’ll see after the final count). I’m to a point where I want to start writing again, now that I know where the immediate scenes are going. Not knowing where they were headed was bothering me significantly.

Everlasting Update

Like I said I’m ready to get started writing again. The outline nicely outlined some interesting action scenes and some more dynamics between the airship characters. I hope to explore that fully. Might be shooting myself with another character with a planned future scene where an air skiff crashes near Marla but it is fun and interesting. Either way I’m excited about writing the novel again.

Anomalous Writing

Jeana and Marie showed up today, albeit at different times. I think the group is going well as per usual.  Otherwise not a lot has been going on with the group specifically.

Draft Word Count: 76,963 (Delta: +0[14])

So I’ve been rather bad and not attending writing sessions and not posting about them. A little bit of both. I apologize but things have been getting a little hectic personally and posting becomes secondary to actually getting some writing done. I’ll try to be a bit more regular from now on.

Everlasting Update

So I remember working primarily on the outline last time I wrote. Unfortunately as I write this, Scrievener is updating so I don’t know my exact word count. I also remember deciding that I knew where my characters were going for the next. Ahh there we go. Scrivener is up. Yes the outline is going well. I’ve figured out another catalyst/mini-climax of a air-battleship crashing into the city. That’ll be exciting!

Anomalous Writing

So Anomalous Writing seems to be surviving well without me, which I am happy for. I still send out writing session reminders but I’ve missed two sessions and it seems like others are showing up without me. Jeana and Marie are still my regulars and I haven’t found an extra member to try to round that out yet but overall I think things are going well. Need to set some time aside to work on achievements…

Everlasting Stats

The following stats are a little off because I started writing before I finished this post so they represent a few extra words than last time.
