Writing Session

Word Count: 7,940 (4)

Okay! Today was a catch up day. I wrote a little bit on Wednesday, but I didn’t record it, and I didn’t write at all yesterday. So today’s writing session was a sit down and catch up, which I did and apparently then some. I had forgotten about my words on Wednesday so I over-wrote the word count by a little bit, but that is okay because, wow, I’m only nine thousand seven hundred and fifty-one words away from finishing NaNoWriMo this year!

Writing felt really slow today for some reason. It took me five hours to write six thousand words, which was very slow compared to last Sunday. But still I pushed my way through. I’m looking to see about writing tomorrow with the intent of finishing up NaNoWriMo at the very least. We’ll see if that happens.

That is a very nice prime delta. I’m rather happy with that, even though I’m planning on writing tomorrow, it means I could skip tomorrow, but I’m not going to. Now that I’m within ten thousand words, it feels like I could knock this out really quickly as of tomorrow, which I really feel like doing because I’m kinda tired of NaNo taking up my time. Not offense, NaNo.

Buddy Watch

CinsAngel has taken the lead! You think 40,249 is nice? Try 42k+! Very impressive. chimera116, and Sithwitch13 are both still a few thousand words behind but I’m sure they’re just not updating their NaNo counts, rather like how I seem to be doing so every few days. I’m happy to report Mur Lafferty is still in the race, slowly adding words. As a professional author, blogger, and mother, I’ve no doubt every word written is a trophy in and of itself.

These last few scenes have been dull and even I know it. I had to fight the urge to re-write them but I did, because they’re obviously going to be scenes that get totally thrown out, but that meant I could have some fun in writing them. I explored Tigh’s character a little more, and expand Toppa as well. Carlos and Marla seemed to be the main movers and shakers of the plot at the moment which is fine, but I still feel a little unrealistic how Marla is pushing everything about, so I’ll ned to rethink that later. Overall I’m still happy with how quickly the writing is going with the outline, even if each scene is coming out sever so slightly different from the outline.

Writing Session

Word Count: 3,406 (2)

Today’s writing session, as yesterday’s writing session, was done at my usual spot. I’ve been very diligent not to fall behind this week, so I can use this coming weekend to really try to knock this novel off its feet, like I did last weekend. Writing session went quickly, although not as quickly as I might have liked. I ended yesterday by splitting a scene I hadn’t intended to split, which made writing today a little slow as I invented some content. To be fair my outline is a little loose in this section, so I was likely to slow down anyway. But I’m chugging away at it. At this rate I might actually be done with the novel before the end of the year!

So NaNo is going awesomely thanks to outlining. Reaching one thousand six hundred and sixty-seven words per day seems to be a pretty easy task when I know what I’m planning to write about, even if I’m deviating from outline. Writing every day still requires some effort and sacrifice I’m not sure I’ll be able to maintain post NaNo, but we’ll see.

Buddy Watch

As usual, chimera116CinsAngel, are leading the charge, with Sithwitch13 quickly following up. I find it strange that I’m actually in the lead but I happen to know for sure that at least the first two aren’t always updating, much like myself. Still keep it up!

Two scenes down, neither of them very spectacular but they move the plot along. Main characters who had never interacted before are now meeting for the first time. The two major drivers of the plot are starting to combine forces. It feels forced, and it is, but that is something I’ll fix in editing. For now, I find it thrilling how close I am to the end, if a little surprising how I’m still learning more about my characters, so many words in.

Writing Session

Word Count: 12,346

Okay first off to be clear, I didn’t write twelve thousand three hundred and forty-six words today. I only wrote nine thousand eight hundred and fifty-four words today. The other few thousand words was written over the course of the last six days or so. I apologize for not updating. The last few days have been hectic and while I haven’t gotten a lot of writing done over the last five days, I more than made up for it today!

Today was actually two writing sessions. One morning session were I wrote about five thousand words at a coffee shop over about three hours, and then an afternoon session with the official NaNoWriMo local writing session where I wrote a little more than four thousand in three hours. So very productive writing sessions. I find it interesting I was just as productive at a random coffee shop as I was among a bunch of other NaNoWriMo-ers (who often talk quiet a bit and provide some distraction).

So given that nine thousand of that twelve thousand was today, my daily average is obviously false but also very interesting, because it is slightly higher than the average needed to write each day. I guess that math explains my slightly positive prime delta. So today basically decided if I was going to win NaNoWriMo I think. Assuming no amazing bodily harm taking the entire day to write so many words will not be in vain. I shall win NaNoWriMo!

Buddy Watch

Okay! So what have my buddies have been doing while I was being horrible (but redeeming myself!). I’m somewhat sad to report that it seems everybody has taken off this past weekend but I can at least happily report everybody has broken twenty-five thousand words, but nobody seems to be up to twenty-eight thousand three hundred and thirty-three, which is today’s goal. I hope chimera116CinsAngelSithwitch13, and MightyMur are still writing!

Everlasting Update

Novel Word Count: 154,624 (+12,346)
Outline Word Count: 36,639 (+57)

So wow. I broke one hundred and fifty thousand words in my novel today. I was flabbergasted. I really didn’t want my first ever novel to have that many words in it. I’ve set my new word count at one hundred and seventy thousand words which I’m almost guaranteed to break if I follow NaNoWriMo. I have made it clear that if I finish my novel before reaching fifty thousand words, I’ll be declaring myself a NaNoWriMo winner either way. However given what I have left, I’m not sure if I’ll finish the entire novel by the end of NaNoWriMo. We’ll see.

So I blew through about five scenes today. Everybody is now at the docks, expecting a rescue, except of course nobody is in any position to rescue anyone. They’re all going to have to work to their way out of it, and not all of them will. Muahahaha!

Writing Session

Word Count: 4,158

Yup. That’s all from one single writing session. Because I was bad and didn’t write a single word while I was out-of-town. Honestly, I’m glad I didn’t, because the scene that I wrote today was amazingly smooth and I don’t think it would have been had I tried to write it while surrounded by people and horribly distracted. As it was I was in my usual spot with no real distractions and just pounded out about half of the world. The other half came more slowly as I switched two a second less fleshed out scene but even was I wrote that I found meaning in the choices I made in the outlining portion, which made me happy.

It is also an impressive word count in and of itself, in my opinion, for a single session writing. Of course I switched to the actual novel-writing itself, which is far easier than outlining I think, when you have an outline.

So despite my amazing word count, I’m still a little over a day behind, which is fine. I made up for almost two days in one three-hour session. So I think I’ll be fine. The beginning of this NaNo was rough. I was still effectively brainstorming and making up as I go along. Now that I’m following my previous ideas, this is going to be a much smoother ride.

Why do I feel the need to put on shades?

Buddy Watch

Lets see how my friends are doing!

It seems like almost everybody is smack dab right in the middle between yesterday and today, suggesting either they had a hard time this weekend as well, or some people just haven’t updated for the day yet. Either way chimera116CinsAngelSithwitch13 are all sitting pretty at above seventeen thousand. Keep it up guys!

MightyMur is lagging behind about as much as I have been, but knowing her she is still adding to her count each day and is waiting to burst ahead. LacyJae and Jeana_Beana are still our furthest behind. Come on guys! Just a few sprints ahead and you’ll be caught up!

Everlasting Update

Novel Word Count: 142,278 (+4,115)
Outline Word Count: 36,582 (-366)

So today marks the first day I’ve written in my novel proper in well over a few months. The energy of having a complete outline definitely carried me for the first two or three thousand words. I wrote an entire scene between Marla, Duke Hugh, and Duchess Quellams that flowed nicely and added ideas to their characters. I even expanded Marla’s past a little and fleshed out Susan nel Hugh, who is slotted to be a major minor character in several scenes, something I might not have known about without my outline.

The following scene I started but have yet to finish was a Tigh scene that I felt at the start needed to be a Carlos scene. However Carlos has been hogging the lime light a lot over the past few scenes, so I forced a Tigh view-point and I’m happy to say it worked. I’ll get Carlos’ recap when we get back to him but we got some nice introspective commentary about Tigh and his amnesia while watching others kill zombies with giant mechanic armor. Even hinted at why Sleepy has a mechanical arm! Not sure if I’ll keep that part though.

Writing Session

Simple basic writing session today. Did it alone at my usual spot, no distractions. Everything flowed rather well. If I had had unlimited time, I would have written far more, but I think I wrote a fair amount for about an hour and a half.

I didn’t fully make my word count but my prime delta is still up. I’m still ahead! I don’t know if I’ll be getting much writing in tomorrow so it’s nice to have that little bit of a buffer. Best part, my next writing session is actually going to start writing on the novel proper. More on that below.

The outline is more or less done! I could flesh out the epilogues more but I think I have enough. I wrote the climax. I’m more or less satisfied with it. Now I just need to write the fricken novel, which I’m totally going to do. With a little luck, my first draft of my first novel will be fully done by the end of the year!

Writing Session

Word Count: 3,676

Writing Session was split up into two locations today. Fuddruckers, which claimed to have wi-fi but didn’t let me login till I was nearly done with my session, and my local NaNoWriMo write in a local library. I didn’t meet anybody new but I chatted with a bunch of people who were also writing. We also did word wars, which was basically mandatory writing time, where after we counted how many words everybody has written. I think the NaNoWriMo writing session is what managed to pull so many words out of me.

So I’m caught up! And 800 words ahead! Woo! Now if only I can get some more words ahead tomorrow too, because I don’t expect to get a lot of writing done this weekend. I mean I’ll try I’m sure but I don’t expect to meet word count.

Buddy Watch

We have a lively race this year! Two of my buddies have broken the ten thousand mark today with me! can you guess who? CinsAngel and Sithwitch13 of course. You probably guessed that easy. We also have a new buddy, chimera116, who has broken the ten thousand line. Keep it up! MightyMur has nearly broken ten thousand. My guess is we’ll see an update late night or tomorrow. Last only because of a least word count is LacyJae and Jeana_Beana who are by no means out of the race but definitely need to take some time to put some words to the page.

The outline is almost done! Two of the three main antagonists are dead or presumed dead. Now the heroes are fleeing from a crashing airship. I have one last dramatic moment, and then it’s all epilogue from there. Wheee. That means novel-writing proper will start probably this weekend. It is actually something of a scary thought…

Writing Session

Word Count: 2,023

An uphill battle. I arrived early to try to get some words done but I kept hitting distraction after distraction. It wasn’t until late evening that I finally started pounding out the words. Even so I didn’t reach my word count, which was a double word count today since I skipped yesterday. But I did go over the normal word count, so hopefully I’ll catchup tomorrow!

So I skipped writing last night. I was bad, I know. But things were happening. Actually I don’t have a good excuse. I made up some of the missing word count this evening but I’m still over a thousand behind.

Everlasting Update

What I did get written, on the other hand, I’m mostly pleased with. I’ve made some interconnecting relationships between characters which may or may not exist after the edit. For example Carlos is now the nephew of Blackheart, and Tigh has a “brother”, but it make for some more drama at the end. I’d actually say I’m probably about five thousand or so words away from finishing the entire outline. I’m actually kind of surprised/scared. On the other hand, that means I’m that much closer to actually finishing the novel too. Sadly now it is time for sleep.

Writing Session

Writing session wasn’t so much a session as I just wrote whenever I could today. It started early this morning and I wrote in about 100 word spurts, taking long breaks in between, including a car ride home. I finished off the my last six hundred words in about an hour. Today was about the same as yesterday in terms of ease. Hopefully tomorrow will get better.

The key to NaNoWriMo is not to edit. That is harder to do when you’re writing an outline than when you’re writing the novel proper, which is probably why this is National Novel Writing Month, and not National Novel Outline Writing Month, nevermind that NaNoOuWriMo is even harder to say than NaNoWriMo. Perhaps NNOWM? Sounds like someone saying nom in an overly dramatic way. Anyway you’ll be happy to know I’ve just been pushing on without really editing despite not being exactly happy with how things are going.

Buddy Watch

My Buddies are wandering their way through the month so far. The first weekend tackling us the first day in seems to have taken its toll from some and energized others. Sithwitch13 hasn’t updated a word count, neither has MightyMur, nor LacyJae. Jeana_Beana has added herself to the board with a very solid 2505.

However it is CinsAngel who has solidly won today’s running, with an amazing 6132. Keep it up Cins! You’re an example for us all.

Everlasting Update

Novel Word Count: 138,163
Outline Word Count: 29,545 (+1,654)

I am not entirely sure why the word count for the outline changed less than my total word count for the day. This might be due to some deleting I did? I don’t know. I’m choosing to believe the session counter built into Scrivener. Anyway Everlasting is going well. Like I said before everyone is on the ship. I’ve lost some of the momentum I had earlier but to be fair, I rushed everybody onto the ship where as I expected at least another day on the docks. So now a group is hiding inside the ship, while some characters are quickly trying to make a mutiny happen, and others are wanting to take control of the ship, while more still want to scuttle it.

It’s a little chaotic honestly. Five main characters, seven secondary characters, and an undetermined number of unnamed characters running around hiding from each other. I really just want the fighting to break out!

Writing Session

Word Count: 1,702

Writing Session today was done from my parent’s couch, as I am visiting them for the weekend. They were kind enough to let me off from post Halloween cleanup chores to do my writing. The writing session was difficult and slow, admittedly. Despite knowing exactly what I was trying to write, I was finding it boring to write. I’m expect tomorrow’s to pick up considerably.

NaNoWriMo 2013

So I’ve made updates to the stat block.

Days Since Update: 1 [How many days it has been since I reported a word count update.]
Delta: +1,702 [How much I wrote over the span of the above days.]
Daily Average: +1,720 [The average words written over the days since I last updates.]

Prime Delta: +77 [The numbers words over or under the expected NaNoWriMo word count.]
Word Count: 3,410 [Total World Count written so far for NaNoWriMo
Remaining: 46,590 [Number of words remaining to win NaNoWriMo]

So NaNoWriMo is going well this year. Yeah I took me a few hours to get out my word count but good enough. I’ll do some serious crunching this coming week. Writing an outline with a word count goal is a little counter productive, because it is begging me to make my outline entries a little word heavy to add onto the word count, rather than just moving on into other scenes. I’ll have to watch that.

I spent some time thinking about what I was going to write today while I was driving. I’m not sure if it helped me get my writing done quicker but I knew in general what I was focusing on today. Since my writing session lasted longer than I wanted it to, I expect thinking about it didn’t help.

Buddy Watch

Buddies are off to a decent start this year. We have LacyJae, who did a respectable 450 on the first day. I happen to know she is traveling at the moment, so it is rather impressive she got it started, even if she didn’t make full word count. We also have CinsAngel with a whopping 2386 as of this morning, which will likely be updated again later tonight.

We have the great, or rather MightyMur, creator of the writing podcast I Should Be Writing, keeping a nice pace at 3430. Mur is almost making want to write a quiet extra 21 words just so I can say I’m beating her.

Our winner for this entry though, is probably no surprise, but Sithwitch13, a member of an online writing group I’m vaguely apart of and regular participant of NaNoWriMo who, if memory serves me, constantly kicks everybody’s butt when it comes to word counts.

Everlasting Update

Novel Word Count: 138,163
Outline Word Count: 27,891 (+1,708)

Today’s writing was focused on what I’ve considered the end-game. I’m at the climax. Everybody is now on the giant airship, and they’re planning the downfall of the big bad. I’m not completely happy with how these scenes are going but I’m ignoring that for now. I’ll fix that in editing. It mostly requires some better build up for my on-the-ship-from-the-beginning storyline character that I just didn’t work into previous scenes. NaNoWriMo is not the time to fix that however.

The end is in sight peoples!

Guess what? I’m still insane! And my brain hates me. Why? I’m doing NaNoWriMo! Sorry I didn’t announce it before now. I wasn’t actually completely sure I was going to until I sat down Friday afternoon to do it. Some of you may remember the mostly failed attempt during the summer but I have higher hopes for an actual attempt this month. Well I do now on the second day. I didn’t think I’d make my word goal on the first day because it was a Friday and Fridays are horrible days to start anything productive on, in my opinion. But I made my word count!

I’m doing a modified NaNoWriMo this year. I’ll be focusing on finishing the outline of Everlasting, then working on the novel proper. If I finish the novel prior to hitting 50k, I’ll consider it success no matter what.

Writing Session

Word Count: ~1,708

Writing session was a pretty basic session. It was myself and Daniel at Blue Baker. We wrote for about two hours (plus food and light conversation) and I got pretty far on the outline.

Everlasting is definitely nearing the end game. I’m actually proud of some of the ideas I’ve come up with for the outline. Prior to starting NaNo I let myself get a little involved in editing the outline instead of just writing the outline but that has made me very pleased with what I have. For example Tigh’s amnesic background has ended up turning out really well towards the end, which just means I need to seed it better in the past when I do editing. I also managed to make every named character’s descent into zombie-ism meaningful both in death and in undeath, which I think is awesome. So anyway I’m pleased.
