Identify Yourself

by on Jul.27, 2011, under Announcements, Gaming, Identify Yourself, Roleplaying Games, Website Update, Writing

Hi. My name is Nojh and welcome to The Singularity.

By day I am software developer, writer, aspiring author, and game designer. By night, I usually sleep. I have many interests and hobbies such as comics, video games, board games, books, movies, science, technology, philosophy, and many other things most people would consider geeky.

The Singularity

As I’ve stated on the about page, this blog is dedicated to collecting various things I find interesting on the web for your viewing pleasure. Hence the name, The Singularity, a place where things collect into one.

It is also a place for me to voice my opinions, reviews, and write articles about various topics from time to time. Comments are open to all and I want to encourage discussion. So please, tell me what you think. I know I haven’t been doing this nearly as much lately but stay tuned, I’ll get to it.

Other Stuff

Besides this blog I have a few other projects. I am attempting to write a novel, tentatively titled Everlasting. It is a zombie steampunk sci-fi fantasy adventure and I am chronicling its initial draft here.  I also organize a private writing group called Anomalous Writing that meets physically twice a week. You can follow the posts via the Everlasting tag or my thoughts or links about writing in general via the writing category.

Speaking of writing, I also write a regular article series called Science Future for Escape Pod. EscapePod is a podcast that buys and narrates short story science fiction for everybody’s listening pleasure. Science Future is written for their blog and is dedicated to discussing the scientific breakthroughs and their impact upon science fiction as well as the impact science fiction has had upon science. For more information about Science Future you can find the introduction article here. If you would like to follow Science Future you can do so by EscapePod’s Science Future tag, or The Singularity’s Science Future tag.

I am also one of the designers of the roleplaying game Vanished Lands produced by Ruminant Productions. Vanished Lands is a post-apocalyptic fantasy western RPG and is available purchase via Lulu.com. The supplement book, Vanished Lands: Storyteller Archive Vol. 1, is available at Amazon and other online retailers. Right now I am working with the other designers to release a rules system for future Vanished Lands releases.

Thank You

I want to thank you all for reading and giving me a reason to keep this blog running. Readership is actually something I am interested in keeping. I’ve been running this blog actively for nearly half a year now and the numbers, near as I can tell, are growing. So thank you for spending some of your time reading this blog and I hope you enjoy it. The only thing I ask of you is, from time to time, let me know what about the blog you do and do not like via commentary either here, or one of the sites that this blog repeats on.

Writing Time: Everlasting #32, Science Future #2

by on Jul.14, 2011, under Articles, Science Future, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

So it has been nearly a month since an update and for that I apologize. It has been a significant amount of busy recently and while I have been writing regularly I haven’t always had time to write an update. I don’t actually now how much progress I’ve made in everlasting yet so this will be illuminating for me as well as you. Some progress has been made with Science Future, as you will see, and overall I am rather satisfied with the pace of my writing at the moment, even if it feels a little slow.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 89, 068 (Delta: +1701[28] Delta: -2299)

So this would help explain why it has felt slow. Even at an expect thousand words a week, last week was completely spent on Science Future and the week before that I did not actually even write as I skipped the writing sessions. If I account for that, I’m really only -299 words behind which I can attribute to lazy writing sessions. Today, for example, I worked on outline and fleshing out some NPCs because I’m coming close to the pivot point for the last third of the book and I wanted that worked out. I think I was actually fairly creative in that endeavor today so I am feeling of good spirits.

At this rate though I question if I will be done before this year’s NaNoWriMo. I also question if I’ll try to participate in NaNoWriMo this year or if I will just help host it with my writing group but not actually officially participate. Questions for September/October when I’ll need to start preparing.

Character sketches will be coming soon. Negotiations are done and the work has been started. Art takes time, of course, so I can’t promise anything anytime soon.

Everlasting Stats

Glossary: 1,565 Words (Delta +0)

Character Information: 5,904 Words (Delta +83)

Draft:  89,068 Words (Delta: +1,701)
Grand Total: 117,634 Words (Delta +2480)

Anomalous Writing Update

Anomalous Writing has been slow the past few weeks. I’m looking into Google+ Hangouts as a way to try to improve the online connectivity as a private online chat room that was technically easy to connect to was hard to set up. Still at least one other person is showing up almost every day, even if some days I defacto join the other writing group. As a habit, writing is now fully formed so I doubt I need anomalous to make myself write anymore but I do like having the group and want to try to expand its membership still. Just not sure how.

Science Future

Science future is going well. I have my third and fourth article written. The third has already been released and the fourth will likely be published by the end of the month. You can view the third article here. It deals with various human memory related scientific advances. The fourth article is special in that it finds a related article in science news for some of the Hugo nominated stories which Escape Pod hosts every year. I thought it a fitting theme. It took an entire week to write since I was focused on four very particular stories. I think in order to better streamline the process, I will be limiting myself to finding scientific breakthroughs as they related to only one story, or multiple stories that related to only one breakthrough. Takes less time that way. Finding images that can be used for the articles is still proving tough and time-consuming, however.

So that has been my writing for the last month. Spew creatively!

Writing Time: Everlasting #31, Science Future #1

by on Jun.16, 2011, under Announcements

Wow it’s been way too long since I did an update. Well over a month. That isn’t to say I haven’t been writing I just haven’t updated. Actually I haven’t been writing as much as I should but life is hectic lately. But today I got a solid three hours of writing in and I felt like I should update. So here you go!

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 87,367 (Delta: +5,561[36] Delta: +561)

Everlasting has been progressing and apparently a fast as can be expected! I calculated a delta for this post since it had been 36 days since my last update. Since I write for about 2 hours twice a week, I have a word count goal of one thousand words per session. But since adopting Science Future I’ve been (supposedly) limiting myself to two hours a week on Everlasting. So that comes out to be an expected five thousand words. That means I’m actually five hundred and sixty-one words positive over my expected word count. Now I know I wasn’t working on Science Future the entire time but I’m still proud of myself.

Everlasting itself is going well. I’ve finally gotten to an exciting part again which means I think the next few scenes will get written very quickly. As my last post points out, I spent a few sessions working on writing group stuff rather than actually writing. I’m not suffering from an “oh this sucks” moment, because well I know it sucks but I’m going to finish it anyway.

I also now have some negotiations going with an artist to do some character sketches of my main characters so I may have those to share in the near future!

Everlasting Stats
Glossary: 1,565 Words (Delta +92)
World Setting: 9,946 Words (Delta +52)
Character Information: 5,821 Words (Delta +0)
Current Outline: 10,455 Words (Delta +4)
Draft:  87,367 Words (Delta: +5,561)
Grand Total: 115,154 Words (Delta +5,709)

Anomalous Writing Update

So the writing group has shrunk mostly. These days it is mostly just Marie and myself, with Steph appearing ill-regularly due to vacations and when her other writing group joins us. Jeana moved on to greater pastures and I’ve made some strides in creating a digital presence for Anomalous Writing to exist in but so far it hasn’t really flourished. Still with just the two and a half of us, we’re progressing on. I plan to work a bit more on achievements soon and active recruiting obviously needs to be done. I’m just not completely sure how.

Science Future Update

Science future is live! You can read the introductory post here, and the first real article here! I’ll be making a more formal post tomorrow announcing it so those of you who keep track of Writing Time get the first heads up! The first article is about portable power and was one of the submission posts I made. Now I really need to get cracking and write some more posts, which is what I’ll be doing after I finish this entry.

Hyper creative!

Science Future is here! Now!

by on Jun.08, 2011, under Announcements, Articles, Blog, Entertainment, Podcasts, Science, Science Future, Writing

So my article series, Science Future, just premiered on the blog of Escape Pod, a podcast that delivers excellent short fiction science fiction in both audio and text form.

The first article, titled Science Future, explains what the series will be about.

The next few articles will come out on a hopefully regular basis. I’ll try to keep you posted when they publish but you’re better off following the Escape Pod blog directly if you want the most up to date notifications! Plus you can listen to some really good science fiction.

Writing Time: Everlasting #31, Science Future #0

by on May.10, 2011, under Articles, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

Writing Time

So things are changing. Likely. I’m changing up the format for Everlasting to incorporate a new writing project I’ll be pursuing called Science Future. More on that below. So this article is now called Writing Time and will cover Everlasting, Science Future, and anything I do with the Anomalous Writing group, plus any other writing projects I start, including stuff from Ruminant Productions.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 81,806 (Delta: +947[7])

Very close to meeting my word count last week. I actually seem to remember hitting it. Or maybe I just hit the end of the scene I was writing because I did do a bit of Anomalous Writing upkeep.  Today won’t see an improvement in word count as I am doing a management day as I need to leave an hour early. Instead I’ll be focused on one of my new writing projects, Science Future. I’ll explain that in a second.

I need to get into the habit of writing outside of writing sessions as I think my writing time is about to get sucked up by Science Future and Ruminant Productions. We’ll see. I need to finish this draft however. With my outline better fleshed out it is definitely easier to write these last few sections, even if I don’t like what I am writing. The urge to edit lately has been huge. And procrastinate. Ugh. Even writing this post is a form of procrastination. I am, right now, looking forward to just ending this novel and starting something new, be it a new idea or just a short story in the world.

Everlasting Stats
The following stats are a little off because I started writing before I finished this post so they represent a few extra words than last time.

Glossary: 1,473 Words (Delta +0)
World Setting: 9,894 Words (Delta +0)
Character Information: 5,821 Words (Delta +5)
Current Outline: 10,451 Words (Delta +0)
Draft:  81,806 Words (Delta: +947)
Grand Total: 109,445 Words (Delta +952)

Rightly creative!
Anomalous Writing Update

I got feedback on my achievements idea! Yay! I did a bit of working on this over the weekend, cleaning up some of the ideas a bit more. Still having problems with the idea of incentives. Incentives should be positive, and something the group can’t do regularly. This leaves out food ideas, since we tend to meet at a food place. I don’t want to do incentives that allow members to do things they can already do but shouldn’t (such as editing, or moving on to other works). Maybe I can come up with stuff like that and make it a voluntary ‘hardcore’ mode of some kind, for those who need outside structure to keep themselves from editing or keep motivated just to write and want to do it that way.

Still looking forward to writing more achievements. Here is a current set of what I am thinking of:
Finished your first draft of your first novel.
Finished your first draft of your first short story
Finished the first draft of your first flash fiction.
Finished the final draft of your first novel.
Finished the final draft of your first short story.
Finished the final draft of your first flash fiction.
Finished a draft of a story. Must have finished at least one story.
Finished a story ready for submission. Must have finished at least one story.
I Killed My Darling!
Removed a particularly good piece of writing that just didn’t work in your novel.
Sir Author, In the Study, With the Writing Pen
Finished writing a mystery story.
We completed… The Quest!
Finished writing an adventure story.
Science Future Update

So I don’t think I mentioned but awhile back I saw a notice that a podcast I listen to regularly, EscapePod, was looking for people to blog for them. Since I blog here somewhat regularly, even with content that isn’t just my own personal thoughts or repeats of YouTube links (sometimes, anyway) I decided to email and try for it. After some back and forth I wrote up two articles working on the premise that I could link current on-going science with science fiction, since EscapePod is a podcast of short science-fiction. The editor likes it with some minor changes, so I’ll be trying to do this regularly. I’m going to be aiming for a twice monthly article on the site, which, assuming they give me permission, I will link to here so you know when it goes live.

So yeah. Wish me luck! I’ll likely be devoting some Anomalous time to these articles so expect Everlasting to slow down.

Flying creative!

Podcasts: Escape Pod

by on Feb.11, 2011, under Entertainment, Podcasts

Hey guys. So I said I’d post more podcast episodes when I found ones I liked. I’ve listened to a lot recently due to driving around and found a few I felt were worth sharing on Escape Pod, a short story sci-fi podcast that has recently (within the last year) gained Murr Lafferty as their editor. But enough about them! Here are the stories:

Escape Pod: #243 – I’m Alive, I Love You, I’ll See You in Reno by Vylar Kaftan

Two people loving and hating each other at relativistic speeds.

Escape Pod: #244 – Non Zero Probabilities by N.K. Jemisin

What if reality decided that it disliked statistics as much as everybody else does?

Escape Pod: #253 – Eugene by Jacob Sager Weinstein

I’m a cat person but even this story made me smile.
