AND DONE! I decided to finish this evening, rather than stretch it out over this week. Which means once I’m done writing this article, I’m bound for home, and then reading Cold Days by Jim Butcher. YAY ME! Writing today was not the easiest writing session but by no means the hardest. I got to a scene that was actually slightly in my outline and so I knew what was supposed to happen. There was still a lot of making stuff up, but as you can see I wrote nearly six thousand words in about four hours, so it was pretty easy-going. I was focused!

NaNoWriMo 2012

I am not sure if I’ll be participating in NaNoWriMo next year. This year was fun, if hectic, but I might be getting to a point where I really want to sit down and write something that is well planned out as I write, and not just worry about word counts. Three NaNos in a row have proven I can meet  a word count. Now I want to see if I can make something really finish with a coherent plot.

Monster Hunters

So monster hunters is getting shelved for now. It’s a neat idea but it was too complex for NaNoWriMo. It needs polishing before I can pick it back up again, and I want to redouble my efforts on Everlasting before I do that, or tackle a few of the short stories I have running around my head. Fans of Monster Hunters need not fear. I have the entire project saved and backed up, including some awesome notes and research ideas suggested by some friends to improve the quality of the novel later. So when I revisit it, I’ll be even more awesome. Until then!

Today’s writing session was not as productive as I would have liked. Luckily the writing session of the prior days has kept me ahead of the deadline. I’m about half and a half thousand words from finishing and boy do I really want to be done with this. My last NaNoWriMo I felt rather satisfied with the story I wrote, even if knew it wasn’t that good. This one is feeling like my first second NaNoWriMo, except that the cool concepts I wanted aren’t there, and the characters aren’t there… and nothing is there. Because I haven’t written it.

I really am something of an outline at heart, and I haven’t been taking the time to outline, so writing has been somewhat grueling. I really only wrote two and a half thousand words this evening and it took me several hours to do it, and even an hour just to get into the right frame of mind to do it. My goal today was to knock out about three or maybe four thousand words to hopefully finish NaNo by tomorrow. I didn’t. But I might still finish it out tomorrow. We’ll see.

Monster Hunters

There is something here but boy is it rough. This manuscript is totally getting shelved. And when I dust it off next, I’m not even going to try to finish what I have. I’m going to take it, use it as a basis for an outline, and outline a far better story that doesn’t meander so much at the beginning like this one did. Definitely going to do that.

We got to meet one of the other main characters for the first time today. Doctor Wila Sylvan. Zora’s boss. And what does she do? She just kinda rants at her. I was rather surprised. I think I made it make sense but it still bothers me that this is the character’s introduction. She was also intended to be a POV character. So I’m thinking if I go back and write her POV, her reaction is going to make far more sense.

I’ve realized part of the problem with the POVs is that I want there to be a surprise reveal for the reader, that can’t be there if I’m writing from the POV of a bunch of characters already in the know, somewhat, and one character who isn’t. That’s definitely something that needs fixing.

Ahh well. Six thousand more words and then I can fix it all I like…

Writing Buddies

Where as I’m just trudging along, writing in order to stop, CinsAngel and LacyJae are still at it. CinsAngel has broken fifty thousand words! And Lacy Jae just broke sixty thousand words! Both of you are amazing and congratulations!

So I have been writing. Just not updating. Well save for right now. For those of you in the US, happy Thanksgiving Day. I managed to get some writing done today but not as much as I would have liked, as I suspect I wont’ be writing much over the weekend, but I’m going to try to make that up tomorrow. Today’s writing wasn’t nearly as smooth as the last two day’s. I decided to make a major retcon of the amount of information my main character has but I didn’t go back to edit all that out. So good for me.

Monster Hunters

This is not the book I set out to write. It’s not a bad story but it isn’t what I set out to write. This, if I keep it going as is, is going to be something completely different. I’m still seemingly writing intro stuff to my main plot thirty-six thousand words in. That makes for an epic not a novel. Whoops. Ah well. I suspect this story will be shelved in favor of Everlasting for a while anyway.

Writing Buddies

Two of my writing buddies are doing awesome with their novels. LacyJae is already way ahead of me at 46,000 words. She has been seriously knocking it out the past few days. I suggest going to take a look at her stats page to see how she was behind until she pulled ahead. Way to go LacyJae! The other mention is CinsAngel who has an amazing 48,655 and who will likely win in a couple of days. Congrats to you!

And I’m back! And I’m happy to report I’m not as horribly behind as I thought I was going to be. I didn’t actually get all my writing done prior to leaving for my vacation, however I was able to make that up today so now I am back on track and thirty-seven words above target. Writing was pretty easy today, if a little slow. I no longer have an outline so I’m creating as I write and that is always slower than having at least an idea of what I want to do. I may take some time to do some outlining later today.

Monster Hunters

So I had a dream last night that I may try to incorporate into my novel. I’ve added it to my ideas list. I”m not sure if it’ll work out or not. Like most dreams, it felt cooler inside the dream than it did outside of the dream. I suspect the mind is just less of a critic while it is asleep.

The book is not really shaping up to be what I was original envisioning. So far it is a single character point of view and I was expecting to write more than one character, but I haven’t been able to think up another point of view to follow at the moment. I’m sure it’ll come to me at some point. In the mean time I’m going to stick with Zora.

Right now I’m not really liking what I am writing. It’s not very cool or interesting. It’ll likely get cut or re-written in edit. But I am writing, which is kind of the point.

Woo! Half way through NaNo! And I’m about four days ahead on writing. So if I knock out an extra day’s worth of writing tomorrow, I’ll be solid for not having to write next week. Not that I won’t explicitly write but if I need to skip. I can. Today’s writing was mostly done at an official NaNoWriMo write in event. Those are kinda fun cause you meet new people. The downside is unless you bring your own headphones, quiet times can be few and far between. Upside is you meet plenty of people whose interest are rather similar to your own and it’s easy to get into random conversations or get advice on how to continue your novel. My particular group likes to do things called Word Wars, where everybody tries to write as much as they can within a certain time span and compare each other’s word count. It’s a nice little competitive way to knock out some words.

Monster Hunters

I am now officially off what little outline I had and so far it hasn’t been too bad. My characters have traveled back in time, although not all of them know that yet. We’re about to have our first real monster attack which I’m not sure how well that will go over but I’m hoping to kill off at least one side character who is being slightly annoying. So we’ll see!

No writing buddies or excerpt today. Catch you tomorrow!

Before you go “Liar!” note that I’ve been writing since around 9am today, which puts me at about seven or so hours worth of writing. Not the best return actually given my usual rate but I wasn’t trying to push myself too hard. Today was the first of two and a half days where in I try to get as far ahead as possible in order to take off next week, possibly, as I’ll be going on vacation, as I mentioned. I’d say today was a success!

Monster Hunters

So we finished one scene and moved on to the next. Scenes in this novel are far longer than they’ve been in some of my other novels. I’m not exactly sure why. Especially since I planned for these first scenes to be prologue openings. But I think it’s because I’m still world building as I write and that is making me write more than I is strictly necessary. For example I know some of what I wrote earlier needs to be worked into dialog and revealed slowly rather than in an info dump. But that is for editing!

I’ve learned a little bit more about my main character in this one. Zora is actually decently trained in self-defense but can definitely get her ass handed to her. I actually think I may keep this scene later but retool it slightly. Zora is confronted by a sexist monster hunter who tries to intimidate her just because she is a woman claiming to be a hunter. Actually I’ll just show it as the excerpt so feel free to read it below! One thing you should know about the excerpt that gets explained in detail earlier. Calling a woman skinny is the equivalent of calling her fat in real life in this particular world. As you might be able to tell, Zora doesn’t take kindly to it.

The hunter is going to turn out to be our primary antagonist I think. Well primary human/kurran antagonist. More of an annoyance. I also started writing Janet, who is going to be Zora’s new best friend. She is already complicated in that she is older than Zora, a fan of Zora (and her work) and is shy and a little awkward. I already think she is adorable.

I keep thinking I’m accidentally writing a YA novel with adults… but that’s not something to be too worried about until editing!

Ohh that was so much easier and nicer. I breezed through half my word count in under an hour and kept writing until I got to a nice stopping point. So much easier than yesterday. I did hit a small snag where my inner editor wanted me to delete a few paragraphs and I admit, I went ahead and did so. There’s a big reveal about stuff that I didn’t want to make yet according to my outline. On the other hand in the outline what I was writing should have been done about eight thousand words ago and I should be far more into the meat of the novel. Ahh well. That’s for editing to worry about!

Monster Hunters

I rant into a slight problem towards the end of the plot today. I realized that my male character was asking my female character to put herself into a somewhat dangerous situation voluntarily. It’d be a situation where if he was going to try to do something harmful to her, she wouldn’t be easily able to call for help, much less fend him off. I’m happy to say I think I resolved the issue a little bit. Both by supplying another female character which means my main female character is no longer along with a older physically stronger man, but also because said secondary woman is going to goad my main character into doing it more or less on a dare. No this is not smart on her part. But I’m also trying to establish my main character, while a genius, has enough of a competitive streak that she isn’t always smart about things. Read the excerpt to see what I mean.

Writing Buddies

I’m happy to see CinsAngel and LacyJae are still plugging along. Keep at it both of you. Use this coming weekend to really try and push! Sadly I haven’t seen any updates from the mightymur or sleary. I understand that Mur might be on some kind of work related vacation at the moment, which might help explain that, and that sleary is taking a more relaxed approach to this NaNo this year so her end goal might be more like twenty five thousand words instead of fifty by the end of the month. Still, you gotta write to get there! So lets keep going! (continue reading…)

Oh wow was that annoyingly hard. I just didn’t have it in me today for some reason. I think it is because I deviated off outline and actually had to invent some new idea as I was writing. It wasn’t easy dialog or description, I was really writing world building that really shouldn’t actually be in the novel. But it is so I’m going to count it. Plus I skimped on about 400 words yesterday so I had to make those up today. You may have noticed the delta went up by seven words. I’m surprised myself. Sadly that delta really needs to be higher as I’m planning on taking a vacation next week… I was really hoping to have it in the thousands…. ah well. There’s always tomorrow!

Monster Hunters

I invented a video game, sport, and social stigma for the monster hunter world. It is called Talestia Elevated. Elevated is the word for online in the monster hunter world, because their internet is called the sky. So rather than being online, you are being elevated. And rather than being offline, you’re being grounded. The active verb is also sometimes called flying. Since the sky is accessed via biomechanical implants that are inserted into every child at birth, nearly everybody has regular access to the sky all the time. This is slangily referred to as floating.

Anyway it is a big deal if someone finds out you play Talestia Elevated, because there is a huge social stigma created by people who played it so much that they became addicted and self destructed. Think of the D&D scare of the 1980s.  Except that in spite of this, Talestia Elevated survives because it had an insanely popular eSports following! The weirdness of it appealed to me. I’ll include what I wrote in y excerpt below… (continue reading…)

Do you know the real secret to pulling off a magic trick? Neither do I, but I imagine it involved a lot of work. You may have noticed my delta has gone down a little. Why might that be? Because I did something bad. I didn’t write over the weekend. Actually I did write a little bit. About six hundred words or so. So in order to make it up I wrote all the words I needed to catch up this evening. Some three thousand or so. I was expecting it to be hard but really it was just a little time-consuming. A little over three hours. Which makes a lot of sense.

Monster Hunters

All my writing was on one particular scene, which has mostly been description. My outline, which probably called for this scene being a fourth of the size it is going to end up being, was rather detailed it how the plot should go which has been very helpful. Again I doubt most of this will make it into the next draft of this novel, whenever that will be, but it is helping me explore some of the characters, particularly Zora.

Writing Buddies

We have a new writing buddy we’re following this time. It is Lacy Jae’s first NaNoWriMo and I have it on good opinion she is already suffering for it. As of right now she is about 3/4ths of the distance she should be at, which is doing pretty darn good in my opinion for someone not used to writing regularly. Keep at it Lacy!

Everybody else seems to have followed my example and slacked off a little over the weekend. I completely understand. Nows the time to pick it back up though! Gotta get ahead before the holidays hit!

Once again over the word count. Perhaps not as much as yesterday but I might yet still do some more writing later. We’ll see. This weekend is going to be busy so I’m going to need to get something done, or I’ll be playing catch up come Monday. Today’s session was a little more distracting. It took me a about an hour and a half to two hours to push this out. That’s still not bad though. Perhaps about average, actually.

Monster Hunters

So ends my prologue, which wrote itself a lot longer than I expected it to. I also don’t think it is going to survive the first real draft editing. It doesn’t really set the tone of the novel that I want but it is good back story for the main character. It was interesting to write. I don’t know if I captured a child’s tone very well. Read the excerpt and tell me what you think.

Writing Buddies

I’m happy to report that one of favorite authors and podcaster Mur Lafferty is doing NaNoWriMo this year and I added her as a buddy, because she is one of my favorites. Mur is the author of the superhero novel Playing For Keeps but more importantly is the creator behind the podcast I Should Be Writing (The website is currently undergoing renovation at the time of this writing but you can find the podcast on iTunes as well!). I’m excited to report that she exceed the daily write goal yesterday so she is doing well!

I can’t say much about anybody else as nobody else has updated but hopefully they’re at it writing!

Writing Excerpt

Today’s excerpt may be a little bit of a spoiler, if you care.

It was very bright and Zora wasn’t sure what happened. One moment the monster was bathed in red light, still kind of invisible, and chewing on the transport and the next it was surrounded by a bunch of white light. The white light was shooting from the black people’s hiding spots, which seemed to ring around the entire monster, to the large thing attached to the creature’s back. It was very bright and very hard to look at. Zora covered her eyes with her fingers, but let one eye peek.
The monster was roaring again but unlike last time it wasn’t rearing and shaking itself. It seemed to be shivering. The people in black where now running around and shouting, although she couldn’t make out what they were saying. More transports slowly lowered themselves above the monster and shot more light at it. This light, unlike the prior streaks, stayed attached to the creature. Eventually it was so covered in light that it was no longer shivering. It had even fallen over. It was like the time Rock got twisted up in the sheets on the bed, except it was with light instead of cloth. Zora felt a bit of relief. The monster had been a bad person and now they had made him stop.
The fuzziness returned, along with the person’s words in her head. All civilians. The infiltrator has been contained. Please continue to broadcast biomed information if you need assistance. Avoid any area with green gas. Avoid the quad. Please report all damage. If you are in need of shelter- Zora concentrated and blocked out the voice again. The monster wasn’t gone exactly but she was pretty sure it was okay to come out from hiding, so she did. She could see others were doing so as well. Some of them looked tired like mommy had. Zora considered going to find mommy when she saw a new transport land in the park. This one was white, rather than black, and several people in white coats climbed out of the transport.
