Writing Sessions

Word Count: 2,000+

I went to my two writing sessions this week. I didn’t write-up a writing time for either of them because the internet at the establishment I’ve been writing at sucks. I’ve been thinking of changing venues since nobody else is meeting me there anymore. With only one and occasionally two people, coffee shops become far easier to do, and have more reliable internet. My writing sessions have been going well. Hitting one thousand words pretty routinely on everlasting. I haven’t done any Science Future yet because that requires internet research. I’m debating taking a hiatus on it since I find myself feet dragging on doing the research needed and there has been little to no feedback from Escape Pod listeners as to if they appreciate it or care about it. Not sure. Also at some point I need to get free writing started again. Hopefully in February.

Everlasting Update

Word Count: 103,130

Everlasting is going well. I’m getting about half a scene or so done per writing session. I’ve been letting myself dally in description, which has been nice, and helps keep my word count high. I’m seeing problems with my outline and a lack of character growth but I’ve been reminding myself that, once again, that’ll get fixed in editing. Ironically I’m starting to feel like what I am writing now is the actual middle of the book and what I wrote before was just me trying to find my way to the middle of the book, which is sad, since there are so many words there that will likely be cut. But such is writing.

Writing Sessions

Word Count: 1,907

And we’re back. Again! Okay so way too long between writing session updates. What can I say? Holidays? Sickness. New Routines. Etc. Anyway I started off the new year’s first writing session with a bag. Nineteen thousand nine hundred and seven words on Everlasting. I was just a bit on a roll. Only took me about and hour and a half as well. Perhaps I’m still in NaNoWriMo mode. I’m not sure. I had the “It is okay to suck” mantra in my head today which kept me from going back and look up too much stuff, although I did learn some history about toilets this session. Speaking of toilets.

Everlasting Update

Word Count: 99,657

Yeah. We’re less than four hundred words away from one hundred thousand words. That seems amazing. It is also way too big. I foresee my edits being a huge hack and slash of the plot, when I get to them. Here are a few things I found kind of interesting about getting back to Everlasting after taking such a long time.

  1. I was a lot further behind in the plot than I thought I was. Entire sections I thought I had already written were still in the outline waiting to be written. This turned out to be a good thing as it meant I felt like I could “fix them” rather than having to “write them again”
  2. Outlines are so awesome. I am totally an outlining person. Being able to see what I had written before as an outline, and what I was supposed to write next, just let me jump right into it without bothering about re-reading too much or forgetting where I was going. Next time I write I’m going to try to fully outline the entire book before I get some serious writing down.

Science Future

There was a Science Future article published last month that I didn’t announce

Science Future: Aggrandize Aptitude

I think this is one of the better ones I’ve done so check it out and tell me what you think. I’m sadly not getting any real commentary on my articles which means I’m probably pushing the mediocre line. Not horrible but nothing awesome either. Or worse, nobody is actually reading it.

Free Write

Free writing is not dead! It is still on hiatus however. With a little luck I’ll get it up and started again next week, appearing Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays, basically on days that I’m not writing my novel or for Science Future.

Anomalous Writing

Well I’m hard pressed to say there is a writing group. It is back to being just me and Daniel. The other writing group that had Ryan and Steph is no longer meeting that I can figure because Steph has a new obligation in her life. While I am still in contact with most everybody through the internet, it is very different from having writing sessions with other people. But I’m writing on my own now so perhaps I no longer need a group for that and should instead look for a critique group. I am not sure and don’t feel like putting for the effort to try to find one physically just yet. Maybe once I’ve done an edit of Everlasting or Werewolf Zombie Steampunk.

Writing Session

Session Word Count: 1,251

And we’re back to writing for Everlasting and man was it easy. I think NaNoWriMo reminded me some of the rules about writing a first draft. Just write and don’t worry about it. It also reminded me how much I love outlines because I still have plenty of scenes outlined for Everlasting which made it very easy just to jump back in. My word count before I decided to stop and write this was one thousand two hundred and fifty-one, which I think is the highest word count I have for everlasting over the last three months. So I’m rather proud of myself for getting back into it.

Free Write & Science Future

In other areas of writing, Free Write will be returning sometime in the new year probably in a less hectic schedule of two to three times a week rather than five times a week. So be looking forward to that. Also Science Future will be appearing sometime between now and the future, so keep an eye towards EscapePod for the release of that.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 97, 750 (Delta: +5,563)

So obviously I didn’t do some updating of word counts before I started NaNoWriMo as my delta is over five thousand. My apologies. Everlasting is still going well. I’m about to dig into the outline and see if I can match where I am with where I want to be when I finish this novel so I can finally be done with it. Ninety seven thousand words is far too big so I’ve obviously gone wrong somewhere but I’m not too worried. Once I have this done I’ll likely be taking a crack at editing Zombie Steampunk Werewolf or starting some small novellas before I come back to fix the problems with Everlasting.

Everlasting Excerpt

Been awhile since I did an excerpt but I felt it was warranted. So here you go:

[spoiler show=”Click to show excerpt”]

Marla stared at the wall of flesh that was writhing lengths away from her and her companions. Most of them seemed entranced by sky. It was exceptionally bright now and flaming debris was falling regularly, setting some of the walking dead alight. It bothered Marla considerably that the afflicted did not seem to care about their burning flesh but instead lifted their arms to the sky as if performing some kind of ritualistic worship of the airship that would more than likely crush them into a second death.

Not all the walkers were content to worship, however, as a few noticed the presence of the three women and began making their ways towards them with unnerving slowness. One was even on fire but Marla had to force herself not to stare. They needed a way out. She glanced to her companions. Olivia was entranced by the wall. She seemed to be whispering to herself perhaps some small comforting mantra. Leanne on the other hand seemed to have gone into some kind of shock, closing her eyes and bowing her head. She was breathing deeply as if trying to calm herself although it did not seem to be working.

They didn’t have time to backtrack. The airship was going to fall directly on their heads and Marla knew it. She glanced up again to confirm this when she realized the mass headed towards her was not the airship and it was considerably faster.

Writing Group

So my writing group has shrunk back down to effectively myself again with the occasional visit from my friend Daniel. I did intend to try to get in contact with other writers via NaNoWriMo but I was too busy to actually attend any of the events. I am somewhat connected to another small writing group that meets on Tuesdays but I still worry that writing alone is going to hurt my productivity some. It might be an unfounded worry since I am alone now and still writing.

Writing Time: WZS #10, NaNoWriMo 2011 #10

by on Nov.29, 2011, under Articles, NaNoWriMo, Weird Words, Writing, Writing Updates

Word Count: 21,255 [14]
Total Word Count: 50,016 (Delta: +2,089)

I won!

So I totally took a hiatus from updating. I’m sorry. Things just got so overwhelming that I was barely meeting my word count and I didn’t feel like trying to write-up posts after spewing forth more and more words. I actually had to play catch up a lot during the last half because I got almost no writing done during the weekends, which always put me back. And of course I think the draft is a stinking pile of shit. But it is fifty thousand words worth of shit that maybe sometime into the future I’ll actually turn into a novel. Sometime far in the future.

Writing Buddies

Everybody seems rather close! Sithwith13 and Jeana_Beana isn’t far behind. A friend of mine who didn’t participate but set himself a goal of 25,000 words attained it the other day so congratulations to him too! To everybody else, keep at it! There’s only a few hours left but you can do it!

What’s next?

Next I start finishing up Everlasting. Hopefully this little break has help me get some of my juice back. Also I’ll be writing Science Future articles again over on Escape Pod. Free Writing might also start appearing again, although likely not as frequently as before. We shall see.

by on Oct.25, 2011, under Articles, Science, Science Future, Technology, Writing

One of my Science Future articles went up over on Escape Pod yesterday. In the article I talk about water producing quasars, faster than light travel, and just how easy it is to get a culture to change what it believes, all in the context of a great science fiction short story. Go check it out!

Writing Time: Everlasting #33, Science Future #3

by on Aug.02, 2011, under Articles, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

Writing has been going well enough. Last week I took off writing of Everlasting and Science future to do some writing for Ruminant Productions. Got some actual writing done on Everlasting today and the week prior. Next Thursday I will likely work on Science Future.

Writing came easily today, which was nice. My word count is well over a thousand as opposed to the last time I wrote, which I only met around four hundred words. I haven’t exactly been looking forward to writing sessions lately but I have been proud of myself for keeping them.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 92,187 (Delta: +3,119[19])

Everlasting is progressing. I’m still not happy with it overall but I’ll fix that in editing. I really shouldn’t judge it before it is finished but it has been awhile since I have written a really awesome scene that I felt really fit what I want to make that I’m kinda feeling weary of the book. I think I’ll be happy to move on to a new project. Or perhaps completely refurbish the plot and characters. I’m not sure. I try not to fantasize about it too much!

Science Future

I’ve published one article since last time that I mentioned in description. Science Future: Harking Hugos. Feel free to go look at it. I haven’t started a new article yet not have the articles been receiving a lot of comments but hopefully with time. I may experiment a bit more with the style.

Anomalous Writing

Anomalous Writing is plugging away. We lost another member to moving away so the official physical member count is down to three. All three were in attendance today, however, which was heartening. I need to start recruiting again!

So that’s about all for writing time. Slither creative!

Identify Yourself

by on Jul.27, 2011, under Announcements, Gaming, Identify Yourself, Roleplaying Games, Website Update, Writing

Hi. My name is Nojh and welcome to The Singularity.

By day I am software developer, writer, aspiring author, and game designer. By night, I usually sleep. I have many interests and hobbies such as comics, video games, board games, books, movies, science, technology, philosophy, and many other things most people would consider geeky.

The Singularity

As I’ve stated on the about page, this blog is dedicated to collecting various things I find interesting on the web for your viewing pleasure. Hence the name, The Singularity, a place where things collect into one.

It is also a place for me to voice my opinions, reviews, and write articles about various topics from time to time. Comments are open to all and I want to encourage discussion. So please, tell me what you think. I know I haven’t been doing this nearly as much lately but stay tuned, I’ll get to it.

Other Stuff

Besides this blog I have a few other projects. I am attempting to write a novel, tentatively titled Everlasting. It is a zombie steampunk sci-fi fantasy adventure and I am chronicling its initial draft here.  I also organize a private writing group called Anomalous Writing that meets physically twice a week. You can follow the posts via the Everlasting tag or my thoughts or links about writing in general via the writing category.

Speaking of writing, I also write a regular article series called Science Future for Escape Pod. EscapePod is a podcast that buys and narrates short story science fiction for everybody’s listening pleasure. Science Future is written for their blog and is dedicated to discussing the scientific breakthroughs and their impact upon science fiction as well as the impact science fiction has had upon science. For more information about Science Future you can find the introduction article here. If you would like to follow Science Future you can do so by EscapePod’s Science Future tag, or The Singularity’s Science Future tag.

I am also one of the designers of the roleplaying game Vanished Lands produced by Ruminant Productions. Vanished Lands is a post-apocalyptic fantasy western RPG and is available purchase via Lulu.com. The supplement book, Vanished Lands: Storyteller Archive Vol. 1, is available at Amazon and other online retailers. Right now I am working with the other designers to release a rules system for future Vanished Lands releases.

Thank You

I want to thank you all for reading and giving me a reason to keep this blog running. Readership is actually something I am interested in keeping. I’ve been running this blog actively for nearly half a year now and the numbers, near as I can tell, are growing. So thank you for spending some of your time reading this blog and I hope you enjoy it. The only thing I ask of you is, from time to time, let me know what about the blog you do and do not like via commentary either here, or one of the sites that this blog repeats on.

Writing Time: Everlasting #32, Science Future #2

by on Jul.14, 2011, under Articles, Science Future, Writing, Writing Group, Writing Updates

So it has been nearly a month since an update and for that I apologize. It has been a significant amount of busy recently and while I have been writing regularly I haven’t always had time to write an update. I don’t actually now how much progress I’ve made in everlasting yet so this will be illuminating for me as well as you. Some progress has been made with Science Future, as you will see, and overall I am rather satisfied with the pace of my writing at the moment, even if it feels a little slow.

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 89, 068 (Delta: +1701[28] Delta: -2299)

So this would help explain why it has felt slow. Even at an expect thousand words a week, last week was completely spent on Science Future and the week before that I did not actually even write as I skipped the writing sessions. If I account for that, I’m really only -299 words behind which I can attribute to lazy writing sessions. Today, for example, I worked on outline and fleshing out some NPCs because I’m coming close to the pivot point for the last third of the book and I wanted that worked out. I think I was actually fairly creative in that endeavor today so I am feeling of good spirits.

At this rate though I question if I will be done before this year’s NaNoWriMo. I also question if I’ll try to participate in NaNoWriMo this year or if I will just help host it with my writing group but not actually officially participate. Questions for September/October when I’ll need to start preparing.

Character sketches will be coming soon. Negotiations are done and the work has been started. Art takes time, of course, so I can’t promise anything anytime soon.

Everlasting Stats

[spoiler show=”Click to show current Everlasting Stats”]

Glossary: 1,565 Words (Delta +0)
World Setting: 9,946 Words (Delta +0)
Character Information: 5,904 Words (Delta +83)
Current Outline: 11,151 Words (Delta +696)
Draft:  89,068 Words (Delta: +1,701)
Grand Total: 117,634 Words (Delta +2480)

Anomalous Writing Update

Anomalous Writing has been slow the past few weeks. I’m looking into Google+ Hangouts as a way to try to improve the online connectivity as a private online chat room that was technically easy to connect to was hard to set up. Still at least one other person is showing up almost every day, even if some days I defacto join the other writing group. As a habit, writing is now fully formed so I doubt I need anomalous to make myself write anymore but I do like having the group and want to try to expand its membership still. Just not sure how.

Science Future

Science future is going well. I have my third and fourth article written. The third has already been released and the fourth will likely be published by the end of the month. You can view the third article here. It deals with various human memory related scientific advances. The fourth article is special in that it finds a related article in science news for some of the Hugo nominated stories which Escape Pod hosts every year. I thought it a fitting theme. It took an entire week to write since I was focused on four very particular stories. I think in order to better streamline the process, I will be limiting myself to finding scientific breakthroughs as they related to only one story, or multiple stories that related to only one breakthrough. Takes less time that way. Finding images that can be used for the articles is still proving tough and time-consuming, however.

So that has been my writing for the last month. Spew creatively!

Writing Time: Everlasting #31, Science Future #1

by on Jun.16, 2011, under Announcements

Wow it’s been way too long since I did an update. Well over a month. That isn’t to say I haven’t been writing I just haven’t updated. Actually I haven’t been writing as much as I should but life is hectic lately. But today I got a solid three hours of writing in and I felt like I should update. So here you go!

Everlasting Update

Draft Word Count: 87,367 (Delta: +5,561[36] Delta: +561)

Everlasting has been progressing and apparently a fast as can be expected! I calculated a delta for this post since it had been 36 days since my last update. Since I write for about 2 hours twice a week, I have a word count goal of one thousand words per session. But since adopting Science Future I’ve been (supposedly) limiting myself to two hours a week on Everlasting. So that comes out to be an expected five thousand words. That means I’m actually five hundred and sixty-one words positive over my expected word count. Now I know I wasn’t working on Science Future the entire time but I’m still proud of myself.

Everlasting itself is going well. I’ve finally gotten to an exciting part again which means I think the next few scenes will get written very quickly. As my last post points out, I spent a few sessions working on writing group stuff rather than actually writing. I’m not suffering from an “oh this sucks” moment, because well I know it sucks but I’m going to finish it anyway.

I also now have some negotiations going with an artist to do some character sketches of my main characters so I may have those to share in the near future!

Everlasting Stats

[spoiler show=”Click to show current Everlasting Stats”]

Glossary: 1,565 Words (Delta +92)
World Setting: 9,946 Words (Delta +52)
Character Information: 5,821 Words (Delta +0)
Current Outline: 10,455 Words (Delta +4)
Draft:  87,367 Words (Delta: +5,561)
Grand Total: 115,154 Words (Delta +5,709)

Anomalous Writing Update

So the writing group has shrunk mostly. These days it is mostly just Marie and myself, with Steph appearing ill-regularly due to vacations and when her other writing group joins us. Jeana moved on to greater pastures and I’ve made some strides in creating a digital presence for Anomalous Writing to exist in but so far it hasn’t really flourished. Still with just the two and a half of us, we’re progressing on. I plan to work a bit more on achievements soon and active recruiting obviously needs to be done. I’m just not completely sure how.

Science Future Update

Science future is live! You can read the introductory post here, and the first real article here! I’ll be making a more formal post tomorrow announcing it so those of you who keep track of Writing Time get the first heads up! The first article is about portable power and was one of the submission posts I made. Now I really need to get cracking and write some more posts, which is what I’ll be doing after I finish this entry.

Hyper creative!
